FOOTBALL CLUB: Last Saturday’s friendly saw the first team narrowly beaten 2-3 by Ryman South team Chipstead. Hopefully Matt Burt’s injury will not prove to be too serious and we wish him well for a speedy recovery. Tomorrow, Saturday, the first team have a home friendly versus Littlehampton, kick-off at the Caburn is 3pm. On Thursday evening the seconds have a pre-season friendly which is also at the Caburn versus Hurstpierpoint, kick-off 7.45pm.

ST MARY’S: Services this weekend are 8am Holy Communion, 10am Parish Eucharist, 6.30pm Evensong. On Saturday July 30, all are welcome to the Vicarage Fete, open from 2pm to 5pm. There will be teas, games, produce for sale, bric-a-brac stall, tombola, raffle and much more. Do pop in a support your church. All proceeds go towards the general running costs of this fabulous resource.

BRIDGE CLUB: At its meeting on Wednesday July 6, the result of the duplicate pairs played was: 1, Liz and Tim Owen; 2, Jenny Charman and Michael Slot; 3, Barrie Smith and Alan Grindley. The club next meets in the St Mary’s room of the village hall on Wednesday at 7.30pm. Contact 814220.

SUMMER SHOW: Ringmer Horticultural and Home Produce Society held their annual summer show last Saturday. It was a great success, with entries up by 15 percent compared to last year. It was a pleasure to have so many people come in the afternoon to view the exhibits and enjoy a cup of tea and homemade cake. The president of the society, Gordon Fowlie, presented the prizes and this was followed by the ever popular auction of the produce that had been on display. The trophy winners were as follows: Carol Blakiston won trophies for best flower exhibit, most points in the rose section (shared with Gordon Fowlie), most points in the flower section and most attractive garden (shared with her family). Paul Wieczorek again scooped a number of trophies including most points in the vegetable section, the onion cup, best horticultural exhibit, best vegetable garden and the prestigious Presidents Trophy for most points in the whole show. The trophy for most points in the fruit section went to Bob Cairns, best eco-friendly garden to David Matthews and Jo Miller and the Banksian Medal for most points in the horticultural section went to Jon Race. Rachel Parker, Rosie Hobbs and Ann Webb won trophies for their flower arrangements and Julia Morriss and Annette Watson for their photographs. Hilary Osman won the award for most points in the cookery and preserves section and Jane Race for best exhibit in handicraft section. Finally this was the first year of the Ringmer Cake Bake competition, where entrants were challenged to make a chocolate Swiss roll. Winners were Joan Fowlie in the open class, Chris Browning in the men’s class and Jack Hobbs in the under 16 class. The officers and committee of the society have been so encouraged by the renewed interest in this show that they are to actively consider reinstating the spring show next year. There will be more information about this in the near future.

TRIBUTE CONCERT: Unfortunately the Mat Monro Tribute Concert on August 13 has had to be cancelled. Not enough tickets have been sold for the concert to make this a viable event.
