RAIN SEES SHOW AWASH WITH QUALITY BLOOMS

HEAVY rain benefited many of the flowers and vegetables during the past few months and Steyning Horticultural Society's Autumn Flower Show saw an increase in entries and some exceptional quality on Saturday.

Alistair MacCulloch won the Banksian Medal for gaining most points in the horticultural sections with some stunning displays and exhibits. Charles Ashby took the dahlia medals and Julie MacCulloch won many prizes in the flower classes.

The committee was particularly pleased to see a huge increase in first-time exhibitors and many of them gained prizes.

Debbie Chalmers won in flowers, vegetables and cooking, with her two children, Anna and Thomas, also gaining several awards in the children's competitions.

John Hughes had a first prize for an excellent set of onions and Roger Brown scooped many prizes in several sections of the show. Jean Porter, another new exhibitor, excelled in the cookery, producing the best pot of jam.

Society chairman Charles Ashby said it was a rewarding day for the organisers and the town to see young and old involved in a good British tradition at the local flower and produce show. There was an enormous amount of enthusiasm and a real "village spirit" experienced throughout the day.
