Radio grilling for Minister

FLOODS Minister Elliot Morley will today (Friday) face a grilling from flood victims when the BBC Radio 4 programme You and Yours is broadcast live from The Anchor Inn, Barcombe.

A small and invited audience of people who were affected by the October 2000 disaster will have the opportunity to cross-examine the minister on his Government's record on flood alleviation.

One of the people who will put a question to Mr Morley is Peter Atkins, of Church Lane, Lewes. Mr Atkins' property ironically called River House was under nine feet of water at the peak of the October 2000 flood.

He said: 'I will be asking Mr Morley about the unfair way the Government calculates its cost-benefit ratio. Flood defence schemes have not been proposed for three outer-lying areas of Lewes Malling Deanery, North Malling and Landport because of this badly-calculated ratio.'

The programme's producer, Melissa da Silva, said: 'The whole hour of the programme will be devoted to the issue of flooding about what should be done about flood defences and who should pay for them.'

Mr Morley will not be in The Anchor in person but will join the debate for the duration of the programme via the BBC's studio in Scunthorpe (Scunthorpe is Mr Morley's constituency).

Phone lines will be opened during the live show to give members of the public the chance to quiz Mr Morley. If you have a question or a comment, ring the BBC on 0800 044044 before 11am. The programme starts at midday.
