So the advice about “how to survive in a heat wave” was apposite after all. Hope your noses aren’t sunburnt!

Playden Church is hosting a summer fete and flower festival this weekend. The aim is to have a traditional summer fete with stalls and games in the churchyard. The word “yard” conjures up a hard, paved area in the mind. Nothing could be further from the beautiful setting of St Michael’s Church, surrounded by trees, mown grass and wild flowers.

The fete opens on Saturday July 20 at 12noon, and remains open until 4pm. The flower festival runs concurrently from 12noon to 4 pm. The theme is Artists and Authors.

The flower festival will be open again on Sunday July 21 from 12.30pm until 4.30pm. It is sure to be beautiful, and it is usually cool in the church.

On Saturday there will be a barbecue a Pimm’s tent, soft drinks, tea, coffee and cake served for most of the day.

On Sunday there will be light refreshments in the church.

You may have seen in fixtures that there will be a concert in Playden Church on the Saturday at 7.30pm. This has been postponed until October.

Mrs Heather Coote sent the following report of the WI meeting:

Our July meeting was the Home Economics Show and the hall was filled with colour from all the lovely displays of flowers, garden produce, pot plants, and delicious home cooked products.

Members and the committee must have worked very hard to produce such a feast for the eyes and nose.

Our president’s newsletter announced that £207 was raised for hall funds at the coffee morning in June.

There is to be a spring clean of the Hall on July 29 and offers of help would be appreciated.

On July 31 we will be providing lunch for North Bexhill Day Centre. They always enjoy this, and members were asked to provide desserts, for which they will be reimbursed.

Mrs Margaret Hewett has arranged a trip to Eltham Palace on Wednesday July 24 and there are still some seats available on the coach.

*Next month’s meeting will be our Garden Meeting at 23, Fairmeadow, Rye, and there is to be a bring and Bby stall.

After all the business was concluded, we were introduced to Mrs Sue Fisher, who gave a very interesting talk on life as an ex-pat in developing countries. She made us realise that England isn’t such a bad place to live after all!

Playden School leavers’ service will be at 9am on Monday July 22 at Playden Church.

The Mobile Library will call at Poppyfield on Monday from 11.30am until 11.50am.

Perhaps find a few to look at too! Meet at Lime Kiln Cottage Information Centre at 2pm. Back by 3.30pm. No booking necessary, donations appreciated.

The service at 11am on Sunday will be Parish Communion.
