Wealden MP Nus Ghani has welcomed funding for local families as part of the government’s £170 million Covid winter grant scheme, running until March next year.

The grant includes a package of extra financial support targeted for those in need during the winter.

East Sussex County Council has received financial support of more than £1.5 million to support households across East Sussex who are struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic.

Funding will be allocated to those already receiving support and to organisations that provide support for those in need, according to Ms Ghani.

Around £900,000 will be used to fund initiatives including food vouchers during the Christmas holidays and February half term for vulnerable children in early years settings and pupils eligible for free school meals.

Small grants will go to families within the Troubled Families and Rethinking Families Programme and support for vulnerable families and young people being supported by children’s services is also being offered.

The funding will also enable the council to award grants ranging from £3,000 to £100,000 to voluntary and community organisations across the county so they can continue their work helping their communities during this challenging time.

Ms Ghani said, “I appreciate the toll that the pandemic has taken on our everyday life and I am aware that many Wealden families are struggling. I am pleased that East Sussex County Council has received a generous package as part of the government funding to ensure that individuals who are experiencing financial hardship are supported throughout this winter.”
