Local councillor Alan Shuttleworth has called delays ‘simply not acceptable’ as the Post Office says it still does not have a reopening date.

The former Post Office in Langney Shopping Centre closed back in January 2019, and it was announced earlier this year the new service would be opening in another unit at the centre on June 23.

However, this has been delayed indefinitely, Post Office bosses say, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Councillor Shuttleworth said, “It is simply not acceptable that the people of Langney are required to wait any longer for this post office to open.

“The Postmaster is in place and has undergone training, the shop unit is ready. The Post Office must make the necessary arrangements to get the branch open.

“Over 5,000 people signed the petition to bring back the post office. It is time that they were listened to.”

Responding to these concerns, a Post Office spokesperson, said, “We know how important a Post Office is to a community. We are very aware that the residents and businesses in Langney are eagerly awaiting the re-opening of this branch.

“Unfortunately the Coronavirus pandemic has delayed our plans to restore a Post Office next door to the previous branch.

“We need to complete the necessary on-site training for the new operators of Langney Post Office whilst following social distancing guidelines.

“We are not yet able to give a date for the opening of this branch. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
