Pagham cranks up for another vintage event

Past, present and future will combine at Pagham's summer community event this weekend.

The latest Pagham on Parade will be the first occasion to take place on the parish's only piece of open land.

The one-acre grassed field behind the village hall, on Pagham Road, is being leased by parish councillors.

Landowner and farmer Derek Bell agreed a five-year deal for a nominal rent to create the sole space in the area everyone can enjoy.

The extra land doubles the size of the hall plot and will be fully used to make Sunday's celebration of motoring history bigger than ever.

Among the vehicles on show will be Pagham Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall's recently bought 1927 Stutz Model AA Vertical eight-door LHD saloon.

He said: "Pagham for Parade is a real community event. Admission is free and so is taking part. We hope to have a large contingent of military vehicles, scores of classic cars, motorcycles, historic lorries and some classic tractors.

"This will be the fourth year we have held the event and last year we made just over 1,000 in donations to give to charities."

The fun will take place between 11.30am and 4.30pm.

Cllr Radmall said the additional piece of land gave more scope to hold larger community gatherings. But it was also suited to casual kickarounds by the parish's youngsters.

"Pagham on Parade will be the first time the new acre has officially been in use. But the gate has been unlocked for the past month or so for anyone to use it.

"We're grateful to Derek for allowing us to use this land."
