The section of dual carriageway between Farthings Hill interchange and the Hop Oast roundbaout junction will be shut from 8pm to 6am for six days starting May 6.

Officials at West Sussex County Council will work through the night to resurface the road.

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council said: “Any queries about the works to take place or the effect of the order on traffic using the highway should be directed to 01243 777620.”

The work is likely to cause disruption to motorists who rely on the vital artery every day, although the repairs will be taking place overnight.

Earlier this year roads around Horsham town centre descended into chaos when Worthing Road - which connects to the Hop Oast A24 junction - was closed.

It was the scene of an all-night operation where 25 firefighters cleared two million litres of flood water after heavy rain on Monday January 6.

But as crews from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were getting ready to re-open the road, a six metre culvert collapse was discovered, and had to be replaced.

At the time West Sussex County Council said neither it nor Horsham District Council knew the culvert existed before its discovery.

Work to restore the road went on for more than a week and caused major disruption in and around the town centre.

Diversions were put in place. West Sussex County Council’s contractor Balfour Beatty worked throughout the weekend to try and shorten the length of time the road will be shut for. It re-opened on Thursday January 16.
