Over-50s get lessons in IT

Sixth former Tom Schooley is helping an older generation in Bognor Regis find out about the world at their fingertips.

Tom (17) is sharing his ICT knowledge with members of the Laburnum Centre day centre for the over-50s.

He spends an hour a week in the Lyon Street building's computer suite with its five computers showing them how to use the Microsoft Office functions, surf the internet and send e-mails.

His six weeks with the students should leave them more confident when they sit down in front of a keyboard and screen.

One of those being helped is Richard Copley (82). The Aldwick resident said: "I gain quite a lot from these sessions.

I've got a computer at home and being here helps me to know what I am doing.

"Tom has got a lot of knowledge which is a great help to us."

A member since 2003, Mr Copley spends about three hours a week on the centre's computers improving his know-how.

He uses his computer to find out information on museums and the RN ships on which he served. Tom got involved with the centre through the Council for Voluntary Service '“ Arunwide and the Outset youth volunteering charity.

He has been a volunteer at Bognor Regis Community College for about four years, where he is studying for four A-levels, and welcomed the chance to extend his efforts into the wider community.

He plans his session with his students to ensure they get the maximum benefits.

He explained: "It's interesting for me to come here and it's great experience for when I go to university to study ICT security.

"It's fun and I enjoy sharing my knowledge."

Outset district co-ordinator Francesca Silvestri said it enabled 13 to 25-year-olds from around West Sussex to get involved in their local areas.

"It raises their confidence and self esteem and makes them feel part of their community by giving something back," she added.
