Stroke club in need of volunteers

Based in Horsham, the club provides support to people who have suffered a stroke or other neurological disorders as well providing respite for their carers.

Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the Club opens its doors to 52 stroke members where they can get involved in a range of activity from physical exercises, group word games, baking, arts and crafts making through to stimulating group discussions.

Volunteers are needed to help run activities and provide refreshments to the members.

On Thursday morning the club runs a Communication Support Group focussing on supporting members whose language and communication skills have been affected by stroke. Volunteers are needed to achieve the volunteer to member ration of one to one and hence maximise the benefit to members.

Sue Stepney who has been a volunteer for eight years said: “I really enjoy volunteering at the Phoenix Club. It is sociable, fun and the stroke members are very appreciative of the time I spend with them.

“This is a great volunteering opportunity for someone who likes to help others and wants to make a difference in the community.”

Stroke member Hazel Osgood said: “I have made good friends and get so much help to really enjoy the activities here.”

Judy Clark, manager of the club added: “We have a number of volunteering opportunities and we pride ourselves on being a friendly and supportive club. We are a unique charity with only two part time members of paid staff. It’s our valued volunteers who provide the day to day service to the stroke members. “
