Rail passengers penalised again

FURTHER to your story on changes to rail services (Gazette, May 10), in business profit must come first, or the business won't survive for very long.

However, certain things in a democracy should be available to all '“ I call this a "service".

Nowhere in the world do railways make a profit.

Surely it is in all our interests to alleviate road traffic problems.

Yet again, the non-drivers and the elderly are to be penalised by this railway timetable reorganisation.

Is this just a private monopoly replacing a public service?

Surely the essence of privatisation is competition, which is obviously now defunct on railways, as on buses, and it would appear the efficiency of the railway is merely serving the interest of shareholders '“ ever-increasing fares for a regularly diminishing service.

Passengers are a bit of a nuisance, but they and the taxpayers, after all, provide the revenue.

In closing, I would like to thank all the 641 people who voted for me in Beach ward.

It was disappointing not to be elected.

However, I do hope to continue to help improve our services in this very special community.
