Prime Minister elected at Southwater school

If you thought campaigning and electioneering were over then you are sadly mistaken as pupils at Castlewood School in Southwater discovered recently when they held their own ballot to elect the Castlewood School Prime Minister.

The children have spent the Summer Term exploring what it means to be a British citizen through their House Assemblies and each House voted for their own representative to stand as a candidate.

In true democratic style, each of the four candidates, Lillie, Jack, Zoe and Bethany explained their “manifesto” to the whole school on Election Day so that all pupils could think carefully about their choice. Issues such as developing the School’s Wild Area, friendship problems and class projects to improve the school environment were debated.

A Polling Station was set up in the School Hall and every child in Key Stage 2 was given a voting slip to cast their vote in secret and then post it in the ballot box. Key Stage 1 children took a leaf out of the Ancient Greek democratic voting system by casting their vote using a coloured counter.

After a count overseen by Mr Noble, Year 5 teacher, Jack was duly elected as Prime Minister. Jack commented, “I was very nervous when I did my speech but as I continued I got more comfortable. I am really proud of myself and hope to start work on our Nature Area as soon as possible.”

Julia Slocombe, Headteacher, said, “The children took this Election very seriously and exercised their democratic rights with a lot of thought. I am looking forward to working with Jack as my adviser. The Nature Area is a good first project for him.”
