Overbaring proposal would be an eyesore

I WOULD like to take this opportunity to correct a few of the errors and exaggerations made by Jane Wood in your May 17 edition in reply to my original letter of May 10.

I was born in Sussex and have lived in the county all of my life. I love the riverside at Littlehampton, having first visited the town on holiday as a boy.

I therefore feel that even though I do not live in the town, I am perfectly entitled to comment on Jane Wood's London-based company's proposal.

Jane Wood's statement that I would like to see the existing warehouse building fall into the river is complete nonsense.

Certainly I said that in my opinion it would be better not to do anything rather than build the proposed development.

I would like to see the existing buildings preserved as they are and continue to be used on a commercial basis.

The statement in her letter saying that her proposal is of similar height to other properties in River Road masks the fact that it substantially exceeds the height of parts of the existing commercial buildings on the site and that the flat roof is of similar height to the peaks of the pitched roof at Pharos Quay.

In the artist's impression of the development taken from the footbridge it is almost impossible to see Pharos Quay as it is virtually obscured by the proposed building.

I am a flat owner in Pharos Quay as I originally said.

Ms Wood is quite correct that in common with other owners in Pharos Quay and surrounding properties I do not wish to see the value of my property reduced by the overbearing new proposed development.

She has used the potential high cost of her flats as an argument to deny any potential devaluation at Pharos Quay.

However, values will almost certainly be adversely affected if it is built, but far more importantly, the area will suffer with a loss of light, aspect and views and Littlehampton will be left with a permanent eyesore.
