LETTER: Are we not guilty too?

Benjamin Disraeli said ‘There are three types of lies - lies, damn lies, and statistics.’ However, that may be a lie in itself, as we’re not sure if he was the source! None of us appreciate being lied to, do we?

We get upset if we think that our politicians are lying to us, and this paper would be several pages less if it were not for letters complaining of what are considered lies spoken by some.

In a TV Soap I sometimes watch, I notice how anyone of the characters will quite happily lie to someone else over some matter, yet when they themselves discover they’ve been lied to, are outraged.

Talk about hypocrisy! But isn’t it true that often we expect a higher standard of other people than we set ourselves.

The apostle Paul in the Bible wrote: ‘You who pass judgment on someone else have no excuse, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things’. And a law given by God found in Leviticus 19:11 simply but pointedly instructs: ‘Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive one another’.

Oh dear! Those of us who complain, who write letters, who get enraged when we’re lied to, are we not guilty too?
