Jake’s animal magic

WELL done to Jake Knight for drawing attention to pet shops selling animals (Gazette, July 14).

There are certain animals which shouldn’t be brought into this country.

Quoting the Animal Protection Agency, based in Brighton: “Reptiles, unlike mammals and birds, are not parentally educated.

“They are born expecting a life in the wild, for which they have evolved to cope, and find many aspects of captivity highly stressful.

“This stress can lead to disease, and very often the death of the animal. They should never be confined in glass tanks.”

Also, reptiles carry salmonella bacteria, which caused the death of two babies in the UK.

Rabbits are the most neglected pet, according to the RSPCA. Left in hutches, which very often are too small for them, these animals are usually bought for children who, after a while, lose interest in them.

Rabbits must always be kept clean, as fly strike can attack their bottoms and eat their flesh away.

So, this young man, Jake, is quite right to protest, and good luck to him in his endeavours.
