Damaging route

Contrary to what many seem to think, the current Arundel bypass proposal does not go through Binsted or Binsted Woods.

Many past proposals did, but they were abandoned after much campaigning in the early 1990s. The western end of the current ‘Pink/Blue’ preferred route (chosen in 1993) goes across Tortington Common.

However, that is still massively damaging. Tortington Common and Binsted Woods are now in the South Downs National Park.

Tortington Common has improved greatly as a habitat since many pines fell in 1987.

Together with Binsted Woods, it forms a huge area of very varied woodland of outstanding value for wildlife and recreation.

The Sussex Wildlife Trust no longer supports the Pink/Blue route.
