The plan to charge visiting motorists to drive along the road through Beachy Head is both dotty and unlawful, however “gently enforced.”

This is not a private roadway through some ducal estate, it is a public highway and we must rely on East Sussex County, as highway authority, to fulfil its statutory duty to protect the rights of the public to the free “use and enjoyment of the road.”

There is need for a speed limit on the road used by so many pedestrians.

With its long straight stretches and then spectacular curves, there are too many temptations for motorists and motorcyclists to see the road as a speedway challenge.
