Care home worry

AS A nurse, I am very concerned for the mental health and wellbeing of the people living in Courtwick Park and Strawberry Fields care homes in Courtwick Lane, Wick.

The young people living there have severe mental health problems and challenging behaviour. They enjoy daily walks in fresh air for exercise and can watch the newborn foal playing, and see the rabbits and pheasants, listen to the birdsong and even the sound of silence.

It is very peaceful and calming for them. Their home is next to the land where developers are proposing to build 600 homes and business units.

If permission is granted to Gleeson to build on the field hards from these homes, there will be noise, construction traffic and building work adding to their mental stress for several years. The land where this traffic and building works are proposed runs right up to the large glass windows where these residents live.

It would be extremely distressing for them and would almost certainly cause a deterioration in their behaviour. If this development is allowed, this rural and tranquil setting will become a noisy, frightening and bewildering environment for them and will greatly increase their levels of distress and anxiety.

They would, eventually, have a bus rumbling past their window every 20 minutes and a large urban housing estate, with all its accompanying traffic, to walk in, instead of the countryside they currently enjoy.

What right does Gleeson have to compromise the wellbeing and quality of life of these immediate vulnerable neighbours to further its own financial gain? Have these people’s rights been considered by the council and planning department?
