LETTERS: Hoping appeal is successful

It must be 20 years since the owner of The Park View Hotel was ordered by the local planning authority to remove his replacement roof. The Park View was also in the seafront conservation area. The planners decreed that changing the original slate roof to concrete tiling required planning permission which they refused to give on a request for retrospective approval.

The owner of The Park View (whose name coincidentally was not dissimilar to Mrs Cowderoy) was supported overwhelmingly by the Hotels Association and the local population as demonstrated by a huge petition. He appealed to the Department of the Environment who granted permission for the new roof to stay.

In view of the expense of replacing and maintaining timber windows in a seafront location compared with the permanence of UPVC windows I hope that Mrs Cowderoy is also successful in her appeal to the minister.

As a local resident I frequently walk along the seafront and the construction of the new windows is barely discernible from the adjoining properties.
