Only drive if it's essential, say police

Sussex Police have been called to more than 300 collisions in the past 24 hours, though no-one has suffered life-threatening injuries.

“The conditions meant there was a significant demand on our resources last night and we were stretched to capacity,” said Chief Inspector Phil Nicholas from the Road Policing Unit.

“Today is going to be about helping recover vehicles as many people fell asleep in their cars or abandoned them so even when the roads did become clearer they were still blocked by many vehicles.

“We will be assisting the Highways and other partner agencies to recover these vehicles. Although the conditions have inproved slightly, we are asking people to not make any journeys unless they are essential.”

He added that the A29 at Bury is still closed this morning, but the A23 is open and passable.

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said Highways staff were now out gritting continuously.

“Following the snow several weeks ago, Highways have replaced hippo bags in communities where there is the capacity to store them, and refilled grit bins. There are no plans to issue further hippo bags at this time,” he added.
