Ninfield Local History Group wold like to thank all those who attended their AGM on April 18 and particularly to those who renewed their memberships for another year. They currently have 28 paid up members and would welcome more. The AGM talk on Sussex Customs And Cures was fascinating and very humorous so a big thank you is extended to Brian Purdey. Their next meeting is June 20, 7.30pm in the reading Room with a talk by Richard Platt on smuggling in Sussex. There is a charge of £1 for members (and £2 for non-members) at each meeting to help towards the cost of refreshments and guest speakers. Ninfield Bowls Club results for their last few games are: May 8 (Ninfield’s first home game) Ninfield 69-Pett 51, May 11 Ninfield 52-Westfield 62, May 12 Ninfield 59-Hastings Observer 50. A few good wins!

The Hooe Open Group (Ladies Club) had a most interesting and informative presentation by Annlyn Boyes, whose father was an accountant, working with the Royal Dressmaker, Sir Norman Hartnell. Annlyn gave the members of the club a very erudite account of Sir Norman’s life and times. Hartnell began his career in fashion by designing costumes for the legendary Cambridge University Footlights Dramatic Club. After leaving Cambridge without a degree, he set up his eponymous label in 1923 at No.10 Bruton Street in Mayfair. He became best known as a couturier and official dressmaker to the Queen, producing a complete wardrobe for the State visit to France in 1938, comprising some 138 outfits. Hartnell produced a range of collections over the course of his lifetime, including bridal wear, perfume, shoes, furs, menswear, jewellery and ready-to-wear. Annlyn was able to show many photographs of Hartnell designs as well as some of the sample materials used in his creations. The Hooe Open Group is now the proud owners of a tree, planted in the Diamond Jubilee Wood at a cost of £60, as a lasting memento. A Dinner Dance is being held tomorrow, May 18 at the Memorial Hall to raise money for the hall repairs which commence in July. There will be a three-course meal (two choices per course) plus coffee and mints, dancing, and a floor show cabaret featuring Les Belles Burlesques and other local performers. Tickets are limited to 80 and are £20 per person. There will also be a pay bar - wines, champagne, beer and lager.,plus a small raffle Dress code is formal. Hooe Parish Council is meeting on May 23, 7.45pm in the Village Hall. All Hooe residents are invited to attend.

Ninfield Flower Group are meeting on Monday June 3 commencing at 7.30 in the Memorial Hall. They shall welcome Carolynne Meer with her demonstration entitled Bags Of Flowers And Fun. All non-members are welcome at a a small charge of £3 which includes refreshments. All flowers demonstrated will be raffled at the end of the evening. Ninfield’s Got Talent returns for another fun filled evening on July 12, 7pm-midnight. This is a great family event held in the marquee on Ninfield recreation ground. There are cash prizes on offer for the participants. For the revelers there is a bar, barbecue and a wide selection of entertainment. If you would like to enter, please contact Sami on 07970650321. Ninfield Carnival will be on Saturday July 13. The theme of the Carnival is James Bond (it is the 50th anniversary of the Bond films). Preparations are already underway to organise the Carnival. The Committee has a committed core of people organising the day, but they are keen to welcome any new members, especially people to give up an hour or so of their time on the day of the Carnival. This year, they have decided to raise money purely for projects in our village. If you could help in any way, please either ring Andy on 892196.
