HOOE OPEN GROUP: On Friday August 14, the Hooe Open Group (Ladies club) visited the Tesco Super Store at Ravenside Retail Park in Bexhill, instead of at their usual venue, being the Village Hall in Hooe Village. The visit to Tesco was arranged with Hazel Lingham responsible for Customer Relations. 21 members of Open Group attended, who were given a conducted tour of the store, from the warehouse, where the merchandise enters the building to when it leaves in a customer’s shopping basket. The visit began with a presentation covering the background and development of the company since its foundation in 1924, when it opened its first store in Burnt Oak in North London. The name Tesco comes from the combined partnership of T. E. Stockwell and Jack Cohen. The tour of the store commenced with the warehouse, where there is storage with controlled temperature and humidity, keeping the products in perfect condition ready for display. The party then moved into the sales area and were shown the various methods of checking out purchases, incorporating the very latest computer technology for controlling sales and inventory, endeavouring to maintain stock at their optimum level. Tesco has a policy of supporting both local and national charities allocating a percentage of sales for that purpose. The Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme provides one-off donations of between £500 and £2,500 to organisations which have a turnover of under £5 million.

The funding they give goes towards providing practical benefits, such as equipment and resources for projects that directly benefit health, environmental sustainability or opportunities for young people in the local communities around stores in the UK.

The tour ended with tea and cakes in the staff rest room. The next meeting of Open Group will be on Friday, September 11, at the Hooe Village Hall, commencing at 2.30 p.m. The speaker will be Councillor Stuart Earl, who is always a very welcome guest to the group.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: They had another great Summer Show last Saturday. The Horticultural Society would like to thank all the entries and visitors who went in the afternoon. They hope you enjoyed the colourful exhibits and the refreshments. Full details of the winners and awards plus photos should be elsewhere in this paper.

NINFIELD BOWLS CLUB: Ninfield Bowls Club had a very positive week last week, having 3 fantastic wins: August 12 they played Sidley Martlets in a Rother League game, winning 79-45. They played Ringmer on August 15, winning by 1 point, 69-68. Their final game of the week saw them win against Guestling, 67-62.

NINFIELD U18S FOOTBALL: Last Sunday, August 16, Ninfield U18s played Sedlescombe, a very strong A League team. Despite a good team effort, they lost 2-7. The Club’s Press Officer, Kevin Regan, said: “We can take a few more positives from it..Some players were played out of position and we have some more players yet to play for us who will make us stronger, so things can only get better. Don’t be down about losing as it is how we react to it that matters. See you all at training & next up is Hampden Park. The point to remember is that these friendlies are against established and strong teams. The lesson to learn isn’t about being beaten but to see how good sides work together to both score AND defend goals, so that you can use that knowledge to your advantage in the hard games next season. Then it will be YOUR turn to knock in 6 or 7 goals! These friendlies are YOUR learning curve, so think about how YOU played and how well your opponent did, and then ensure you play better by using your brains as well as your feet. Yes, you WERE beaten, yes, you were whupped, but that should mean you’ll be keen when it will be YOUR turn to ensure others are on the losing side, not you!” The team’s pre-season friendlies continue, where the team would love your support, as follows: Sunday, August 23 against Hampden Park U18s (AWAY) - 12:30 a.m. KO, Thursday, August 27 against Westfield XI (HOME) - 7:00 p.m. KO and finally Sunday, August 30 against Little Common U18s (HOME) - 11:00 a.m. KO.

FLOWER FESTIVAL: The Ninfield Flower Group’s Flower Festival “On the Box”, is August 29 - 31, 10.30 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Ninfield Memorial Hall. All money raised this year is in aid of the Medical Detection Dogs, Bexhill Dementia Alliance and the Dragonflies project Hastings, with a donation to the Memorial Hall. Entry £2.00 per person. Refreshments, Plants, Raffle, Crafts and other stalls. Do go and enjoy the beautiful arrangements.

HISTORY EXHIBITION: The Ninfield Local History Group are mounting an exhibition on Saturday, September 12, at the Memorial Hall. The group has set aside space for stall holders so if you would like to run a stall at this event please call 01424 892248 to book a pitch.
