Netherfield CE Primary School Summer Fair takes place this Saturday May 18 from 12.30 - 3.30pm. We have a great selection of stalls including face painting, an obstacle race, welly wanging, cream teas, a BBQ and plants (tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies, courgettes, raspberries, french beans etc.). We also have some exciting live acts lined up including Dende Nation who are an infectious Afro-Brazilian Samba Reggae style drumming band, a demonstration by Westerleigh Judo and students from Stagecoach will also be performing.

Netherfield Village Garage Sale – Sell your unwanted household / garden / garage / furniture goods etc. from your own garden or driveway on Saturday May 25 from 9am. £5 per stall. All proceeds to Netherfield Village Hall. Contact Chiffer 01424 838343 or Marrissa 01424 838106. Weather permitting.

Netherfield Village Hall – We are looking for volunteers to help us brighten up the village hall this weekend, Saturday and Sunday May 18 and 19. Let’s Colour and Groundwork will supply the paint, brushes and games to keep the whole family entertained. Netherfield Church – This Sunday May 19 will be a Holy Communion at Mountfield, with the following week, the final service for May, at Netherfield. All services commence at 10 am.

The quiz night held on Friday May 10 in the church was a great success. Yes, there could have been more teams, however, those who didn’t come were the losers. It was a brilliant night starting with the supper and then the quiz. The questions were a good test of many topics but were fair, challenging and certainly kept everyone on their toes. The banter was brilliant, the control and marking suitably strict! Everyone enjoyed the light-hearted atmosphere and the great fun quizzes can generate. Well done and thank you to the three ladies who set the questions and ran the quiz, Madeline, Margaret and Felicity. Thanks also to Rosie, Emma, Jackie, Marian and Maureen for preparing the excellent bangers and mash supper. The raffle and wine both went down well and the evening boosted church funds by some £150 – not bad for a fun evening. Thank you to those who supported it and congratulations to the winning team of Neil, Ros, Bill and Lynsey.

The following day saw a small band of people attack the churchyard to get it into shape for the summer. The first clear up and grass cut is always a challenge so a huge thank you to Peter Ticehurst for the use of mowers and other equipment and his enthusiasm for getting the job done. Thanks also to Richard, Tim, Karen, Sue and Maureen. Another few hours of very sociable togetherness (and hard work) that proved very successful now we can see the result. Thanks for the coffee, sausage butties and biscuits that kept us going. The routine maintenance will now carry on through the summer by the regulars, to keep our churchyard looking tidy and cared for.

Both the above events indicate an honest interest in our church, often by people who are not church goers. There are quite a number of people in our village who do support the church as an entity and acknowledge it has a purpose and is necessary to the general spirit of village life. To some it is just the building, for others it is a quiet place used privately, but for many it is needed on special occasions. The sermon by Revd. Malcolm Elwis at Brightling last Sunday contained reference to the slogan used by the Post Office to preserve their business – “Use it or Lose it” and how this is now very relevant to our churches. This is so very true and support is very much needed to keep ours going, just think on this and acknowledge how people are helping in ways they can and consider what you could do. Ladies of Netherfield - Did you know that there are BRA RECYCLING facilities in Battle? We are collecting unwanted bras, washed but in any condition for good causes. The bras are sent out to Africa where women have increased status and less likely to be abused if they are wearing one. Through this brilliant scheme, we are also able to support Breast Cancer Research and local walking and cycling projects. There are collection points in Knickknicks, in Old Ladies Court and in the Post Office, both in Battle. Please join in and tell your friends. So, when you come to Battle remember your unwanted bras.
