MOUNTFIELD BIG SCREEN SOCIAL NIGHTS: The next date is Friday March 17th (Happy Paddy’s Day!) with the showing of SPECTRE This 2015 blockbuster was Sam Mendes’s follow-up to”Skyfall) and was the 27th 007 movie — and the biggest budget Bond movie ever. Doors open 7.30. Usual pop-corn, chocolate and drinks available with a suggested donation of £5.00 to Village Hall funds. Plenty of time to chat and to discuss this week’s quiz. How many screen actors can you name who played James beyond before Daniel Craig? (Note: screen actors, so Bob Holness’s radio role doesn’t count). No Googling allowed. Answer next week.

BT ROAD CLOSURE: Signs have gone up on along ‘Kent Lane’ — actually on Church Road just to the east of Church House and on Mountfield Lane at Castle Farm announcing ROAD CLOSED from 13th March for three weeks. However, we have been assured by the agents managing the ‘closure’ and diversion that the road will remain open but be subject to delays. The main operational area will be in the lay-by outside the church. At times, the engineers will be blocking the road but they will always try to let traffic through as quickly as is consistent with safety and the timeframe. The guess is that there could be delays of five or ten minutes at worst. SOUTH EAST WATER CONSTRUCTION: Work started this week on laying a new water main. All our councillors have maps of the construction but, in outline,it will run along the southbound carriageway of the A21 from just north of the old pub, then cut across the verge outside the JC Caravans entrance, through the old school car park, down the grass verge to the weighbridge, and then round the old road before rejoining the existing main opposite Vinehall School. During operations, the school car park will be used by the contractors, Clancy Docwra, as a works compound. The method of working will be via series of pits from which they will mole without the need for any lengths of open trench. To be honest, most of the work will just inconvenience the homes and businesses along the route. The only really awkward bit will the temporary traffic lights as they construct the first lengths down the A21.

MOUNTFIELD CLUB: A date for your diary. There will be another Quiz night, this time on Easter Saturday 15th April starting for about 8.00pm. There will also be a Buffet & Easter Egg Raffle. There will be a £2.00 entrance fee per player with no more than six per team.

In other club news, the Club’s snooker team are having an outstanding season. Having recently reach the Division 2 plate cup final, they are only now two frame wins away from promotion to Division 1 for the first time in their short league history. On Tuesday 21st March, Steve Smith and the team travel to Battle to play the Plate Cup final against Hawkhurst, with the prospect of a League and Cup double a real possibility. With only two league matches left, Club members Ashley Sutton and John Shaw are joint top in the League with the most wins, and Ashley’s 31 break is still the highest in the League.

There is more good news as the Club has been chosen to host the Don Blinks snooker cup final between Staplecross and Battle on Monday 20th March. The Club will be also hosting the League Pairs Cup Final the following Week on Tuesday 28th March. Ashley Sutton has reached the Division 2 singles final and will hopefully play Kevin Gray in the final who is still due to play his semi-final match.

CONTACT: Interesting to think that water from the Darwell Reservoir is piped from the shadow of the dam to Hastings by Southern Water, sold to South Eastern Water, who will then pipe it back through the shiny new water main. There is probably some corner of Mountfield that isn’t being dug up or closed.
