More delays to work on major housing estates in North Bersted and Felpham

Further delays have hit the start of work on major housing estates in North Bersted and Felpham.

Developers are no nearer laying the first bricks for the 650 homes on the site six development.

The latest update on the much-delayed schemes was given by an Arun District Council planning officers to councillors.

Keith Wheway told the council's development control committee it was unrealistic to expect the original timetable of 200 of the homes to be built by March 2011 to be met.

"That is not going to happen in reality," he said, "because the developers have not got on to the site yet.

"We have had dates given to us for a start on the site from anywhere from next month to February 2010.

"They would then have to do the infrastructure works before they start building the dwellings."

Planning permission was given by the council last year to three building companies '“ Berkeley Homes, Persimmon Homes and Barratt Homes '“ to carry out the development.

But the firms' finances and hopes of selling the new properties, 650 in North Bersted and 700 in Felpham, have been savaged by the worldwide recession.

This has caused the starting date for the construction to slip further and further back.
