More arrests as police tackle drinking in Bognor town centre

More arrests have been made by police as they tackle drinking in the town centre.

The five men were tackled by police officers for their activities in the Sunken Gardens between Waterloo Square and the Hothamton car park.

Police are continuing their high-visibility patrols of the area to discourage further drink-fuelled incidents.

They are being helped in their quest by the addition of the gardens to the area covered by Bognor's CCTV network.

Pruning work by Arun District Council means the gardens can be seen by the cameras for the first time.

Bognor police station's Inspector Clare McKnight said: "This is a result of some good joint working between the police and the council. Having CCTV coverage of the gardens will be a big help to us."

The Observer reported earlier this month Insp McKnight's determination to stop the recent drunkenness which had blighted the gardens. Many of those involved are eastern Europeans. Others are English.

Since then, three men were arrested there on July 5 for being drunk and disorderly.

Action was also taken against further incidents of excessive drinking around midday.

A Polish man '“ one of two drunk in the gardens '“ was arrested at 8am for being abusive towards a police officer. He was given a caution.

Another Polish man was arrested for being drunk.

Insp McKnight said extra police vigilance had halted the spread of the open-air drinking sessions to Longbrook park on Felpham seafront.
