MAGAZINE: Summer holiday tips and advice for driving in Europe
While all eyes will be on the momentous decision facing Britain on June 23rd, Britain's sometimes stormy love affair with Europe will continue unabated this summer whatever the outcome.
Millions of motorists will be heading off to the continent, flocking to French, Italian, Spanish hotspots and beyond in their trusty motors.
But a new study, suggests that the prospect of Brexit could give this hardy tribe of Euro road-trippers the jitters – 28% say the prospect of Britain leaving would make them less likely to take their car overseas, with 38% believing it could become more expensive, one in three fearing it could become more difficult and 16% even fearing they’d be more likely to be prosecuted for little-known rules of the road if the UK leaves the EU.
Whatever happens, Brits clearly need to brush up on their foreign driving skills before going Continental according to the Zuto report.
37% of Brits driving abroad admit to getting lost, 23% have forgotten which side of the road they are meant to be driving on (!) and 14% have driven the wrong way around a roundabout. But mistakes can lead to mishaps or worse – 8% have been stopped for speeding, one in twenty have been stopped for a law they’d never heard of and an unlucky 4% have had an accident while driving abroad.
The data categorically shows that continental motoring blunders leave us out of pocket to the tune of £126 on average, with on the spot fines or repairs costing us dear.
To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, watch the video to find out what you need to know before leaving and some top tips on how to drive safely on the continent.
