Loos to go unisex but building and shelter will remain

STEYNING'S High Street toilets are to be replaced with two unisex stainless-steel cubicles.

But the original building and bus shelter will be retained in a scheme that has the blessing of The Steyning Society.

And the suitability of the new scheme had been questioned by former parish council chairman Mike Reed, who said the new toilets would have no privacy and were totally inadequate for a town as big as Steyning.

He said a previous proposal, considered in 2006 when he was chairman, should have been taken up instead.

But vice-chairman Cllr Phil Hampson said the parish council was left with no option.

"The original scheme would have included a new toilet building as well as a new toilet block and a small amount of under cover seating but no developer was interested in taking it on and the parish council certainly didn't have the money to do it."
