And although Beatrice Collins, 84, needed her wheelchair to join in, she revelled in the company and the experience of her trip along the seafront.

Beatrice was the first person to be taken out by the Happy Heart Walking Project, which is being run alongside Inspire Leisure’s healthy walks programme from Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre, every Wednesday morning.

It has been launched in partnership with Inspire by Leonard Cheshire Disability, for people the charity supports in the community.

Julia Dendle, a volunteer coordinator for the charity, who accompanied Beatrice, said: “It went really well. She had a fabulous time and has signed up to come every week.

“The idea is to get people who use our service to join with other walking groups, which will hopefully lead to them becoming involved in social activities, too.”

The walkers and Beatrice made it down to the river footbridge and over to the west bank for a cuppa, before returning.

Anyone who would like to volunteer to help should call Julia on 07793 804318.
