Littlehampton teenagers honoured for volunteering

FAR FROM stereotypical, teenagers from Littlehampton have been recognised for giving their time.

Matt Pollard and Peter Yip, both 17 and Littlehampton Academy sixth form students, were among a number of young volunteers invited to a ceremony in Bognor on Friday, to be presented with awards by Arun Outset Youth Action.

Matt, who volunteers at Arun Community Church, helping to run workshops and playschemes among other things, was handed two V50 certificates, each a recognition for giving 50 hours’ service.

Peter was also given a V50 accolade for the time he has put into various projects, including the Flintstone Centre youth club, and the Littlehampton youth wing.

Margaret Sanders, youth volunteer adviser at Arun Outset, which helps find placements for willing youngsters, said: “We want to say a very big thank-you.

“The organisations people like Matt and Peter work with really appreciate all their volunteers, and many would not be able to carry on without their them.

“They are so valued, and I cannot stress that enough.”

She added that by getting involved in such projects, while helping out the community, volunteering also had its personal benefits.

“It’s enjoyable, and it gives the young people a chance to meet different people.

“More than anything, it can give them such valuable experience that they can take with them throughout their lives.”

There were, she added, many more teenagers like Matt and Peter out there. “So many Littlehampton young people volunteer, and every single one is appreciated.”
