Lead thefts '“ three arrested

POLICE in Heathfield had luck on their side while investigating the theft of more than £5,000-worth of lead from roofs in the town.

Plain clothes officers were driving along Sheepsetting Lane at lunchtime on Friday when they saw youths carrying lengths of lead.

Three local youths were arrested and are being interviewed about the incident.

Lead valued at about 1,000 was carved off the roof of Cross in Hand Primary School, Sheepsetting Lane, sometime overnight between Wednesday and Thursday last week.

School staff believe thieves used angle-grinders to saw off the lead. On the same night lead was stolen from the roof of Barclays Bank in the High Street.

Then the following night, between August 29-30, about 4,000 worth of lead was once again stolen from the primary school roof.
