Labour in control of Hastings Borough Council

After Amber Rudd sensationally stole the show on Friday morning to become MP, Labour had something to cheer about in the local council elections.

The party - who hours before had been mourning Michael Foster's defeat - were in celebratory mood after winning back control of the local authority.

The town turned red after a host of surprise results - including the Tory chair of planning Terry Fawthrop losing to Labour rival Mike Turner in Baird ward.

The count was not without its moments for the Tories mind. Alan Gurney stole Silverhill from independent councillor Steven Springthorpe.

Half of the council's 32 seats were up for election, with Labour coming out on top.

The final overall count for the local authority is now Labour: 16, Conservatives: 14 and Lib Dem: 1.

The 32nd seat will be elected later this year following the sad death of Conservative councillor Roy Rucker earlier this month.
