THE TERRIBLE TWO'S: Who was it who sat in their cave/castle, or indeed living room, and decided that the word '˜to' should be spelt , not only in three different ways, but have three entirely different meanings [was it planned, or did they just run out of vocabulary?] We eat our dinner, with the self- same' fork' that means a '˜fork' in the road, and the word '˜bore', for instance can be spelt three ways , yet mean four different things, a male pig [boar], or a totally uninteresting person [ bore][or, to make a hole into [bore], or indeed '˜boor', meaning a rough, insensitive person. [Was there nothing interesting drawn on the cave wall that night, that they should have confused us so.] Is life not complicated enough? On the other hand it's rather fun, it keeps us on our toes, and I would like to have sat down and had a cup of tea with the people who concocted such word play, or do I mean a cup of '˜tee', or' ti' [ the seventh note of the musical scale]. Oh for heaven's sake, just forget about the tea, they were having a laugh weren't they, perplexing us with such discrepancy. I shall put my concerns in my diary [DEAR diary, oh DEAR, language certainly costs us DEAR, but it's DEAR to our hearts, but not to the DEER living in the forest. Just hang in there DEAR diary for DEAR life] See what I mean by confusing!

TALKING TRACY AND SILENT SUE: Tracy Barnett and Sue White plan to ‘Button It For BACE’. These ladies give tireless support for BACE a charity supporting projects in The Gambia, West Africa, which is currently building a third classroom for their nursery school. The plan is for the two of them to remain silent, with their faces covered by a face mask for an entire 36 hour period, starting at 5pm on Friday,24th March, until 12 noon on Sunday 26th March [no texting, emails, tweeting or facebook], and under strict supervision! These two ladies will be out and about that weekend to drum up support. Most of us would balk at the very idea of a 36 hour silence, so if you wish to give a well-deserved donation to BACE, on behalf of these brave, audacious ladies. TONIGHT IN IDEN VILLAGE HALL: All are welcome to a meeting of the Iden And District Natural History Society tonight in Iden village hall at 7.30pm, where the lecture will be ‘Seeing The Light; Moths’, by Keith Palmer. Visitors pay £3 for an informative evening.

SHIP TO SHORE: There is to be a variety show, entitled ‘Ship To Shore’, performed by The Iden Players, on Saturday 8th April. There are two performances, one at 2.30pm, and one at 7.30pm, and tickets cost £7 for adults, and £4 for children. Proceeds go to ‘ Friends Of Iden Church’, and ‘St Christopher’s Hospice’. Tickets are now available from Iden Stores, or ring 01-797 280143. There will be a raffle, and raffle prizes will be very gratefully received.

HAVE YOU GOT A TEAM READY?: Get ready for a monthly quiz at ‘The Bell’, on the third Wednesday of each month. [Starting this month on 15th March, at 7.30pm.] There is nothing quite like a quiz to hone our minds. Win or lose, it’s the taking part that matters!

A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: The Service Of Holy Communion in Iden Parish Church, is at 9.30am this Sunday.

COFFEE MORNING IN THE ‘OLD HALL’: All are welcome to a coffee morning to discuss the repair of Iden Church Tower, which will be of interest to many. Photographs and question time will give us an idea of the procedure, so do come along on 25th March, from 10am-12 noon.

MOTHERING SUNDAY SERVICE: A service to celebrate our mothers will be on Sunday 26th March, at 9.30am. All the family are welcome to this lovely service. Coffee will be served afterwards in ‘The Old Hall’.

YOGA: There is Yoga in The Old Hall [by the church] each Friday morning from 9.30am-10.30am, at a cost of £6 per session. Anyone wishing to join , please email [[email protected]]

THANK YOU FOR THE DAFFS!: For all those who planted daffodils, all around the village recently, to add to the ones we already had, a very big thank you. They are on every verge and nook and cranny, and are quite splendid. The Church yard is full of daffodils. Sitting there with their little mates, the snowdrops, they are a sight to behold. I wonder if as a little treat God allows Wordsworth to take a peek from up in heaven, at the hosts of golden daffodils all around England. If he does, Iden certainly won’t disappoint!
