Thursday May 2 All Saints with St Nicolas Parish church there was A Service Of Thanksgiving for The Life of Mrs Hilda Joan Horton who passed away on April 24.

Hilda was born in Battle on 10 November 1922 and she spent a happy childhood in Rye Harbour with her parents and her sister Phyllis. After attending Rye Grammar School she went to live in Birmingham. She left school early to nurse her Mother who sadly died in 1939. During the war Hilda’s father sent her to stay with Phyllis in Rye. Hilda worked with the accounts first at Winter’s Dairies and then at Rother Ironworks. Here she met Robert, a young man from Icklesham, and on 23December 23 1944 they married at St. Mary the Virgin, Rye’s Parish Church. Bob went overseas with the RAF while Hilda stayed in their Winchelsea home. After the war Linda and Alison were born, Bob returned to the Ironworks and Hilda started at the Post Office in Winchelsea.Always cheerful and highly respected Hilda worked there until well into her 70s. Then they moved to Icklesham and became hugely involved in the life of this village. Olde Tyme Dancing, cricket and especially stoolball kept them busy and Hilda still managed to make cakes for lots of village events. Sadly in 1989 Bob passed away after a stoolball match. Hilda gave the club a silver salver in Bob’s memory to be presented to the winning team at Icklesham Stoolball Club’s Annual Ladies Tournament. Then a few years later as President of the club she was thrilled when Icklesham won and she presented the salver to the Captain her granddaughter Louisa. Eventually Hilda moved to the Five Villages and carried on being so active helping with the Mini BUS Club and the raffles. We extend our deepest sympathy to Linda and Alison, grandchildren Paul,Martin,Louisa and Jacqui, great grand children Molly,Daisy,Ella and Lewis and all the family friends and neighbours of this much-loved lady. Hilda and Bob are now re-united in Icklesham Churchyard.
