Hastings Youth Council pledges tohelp support Fishermen's Museum

The museum, housed in the old fishermen’s church at Rock-a-nore, built in 1852, is free to visit and houses a fascinating collection of fishing artefacts, including the last clinker boat built at Hastings.

Earlier this year the Observer highlighted the museum’s need for more donations and financial support.

The museum is currently open every day of the year, except Christmas Day, but could be forced to reduce its opening hours if visitors are not more generous with donations.

Old Town councillor James Bacon said: “I was sad to hear of the financial situation of the museum and organised a private viewing and discussion session with Museum Manager, Jan, and the Hastings Youth Council.

“This meeting provided an opportunity for the Youth Council to give ideas on how the museum could attract more young adults to visit and volunteer, as well as generate more interest in making donations and increasing the income of this visitor attraction.

Youth Councillor, George Palmer, said: “We had such an enjoyable time visiting the Fishermen’s Museum, especially as most of us haven’t been for years.

“This is an attraction which college students and those in secondary schools can use for various projects, including art, history and photography.

“Please do consider this place to help with your studies. We would also like to express our interest in helping promote this museum for young volunteers to be part of.

“The team will be more than happy to find jobs for you which will also look great on your CV.”

Councillor Bacon said: “I am really keen to see more visitors enjoy this part of our Hastings heritage and donate more to keep the Museum afloat. Lots of ideas where discussed, including schools and businesses using the venue for private evening viewings and quirky music events. I am really proud of the Youth Council for these great ideas.”
