Hastings councillor praised for '˜tireless service'

A special council meeting is being held at 5.30pm on Wednesday (April 13) to vote on the proposal to bestow the honour on councillor Maureen Charlesworth.

The motion has been put forward by Cllr Charlesworth’s fellow ward councillor Rob Lee.

The nomination reads: “Councillor Maureen Charlesworth has given nearly 30 years dedicated service to the residents of Hastings.

“She was first elected in 1989 representing St Helens Ward.

“She has since represented Central St Leonards and Maze Hill.

“Councillor Charlesworth has served two years as deputy mayor and four years as mayor of this borough.

“Her dedication to civic life is further evidenced by her tireless service to volunteer organisations and charity groups such as the chess congress, the Hastings trolley bus restoration group, president of the Hastings Week committee, veterans associations, hoteliers associations, SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Air Force Families Association), the Royal British Legion and many more besides.”

In order for Cllr Charlesworth to become an honorary freeman it must be passed by at least two thirds of voting members.
