Guides' 'modern image' on show at BIG event

A taste of everything that is good in guiding was on show in Bognor Regis on Saturday.

Billed as the BIG Event, hundreds flocked to the show in Hotham Park in the warm sunshine to see and experience the modern image of Guiding in the 21st century.

Gone is the untrendy image of yesteryear and in its place is a huge range of free fun-filled activities for all ages, from the young five to seven-year-old Rainbows right through to the involvement of the more senior members in the Trefoil Guild, where there is no upper age limit.

The event, which started with girls and guiders in song was opened by Bognor Regis MP Nick Gibb, an ambassador for

Girlguiding Bognor Regis, who cut the ribbon and welcomed people to the show.

Activities were based on those which regularly take place at meetings, with visitors invited to have a go at tent pitching, pioneering, crafts, games and other challenges.

There was also the chance to enjoy open-air performances by local rock bands Golden Boulder and The Lost Boys.

Along with displays and exhibitions were opportunities for people to get involved in guiding along with stalls selling a wide range of items including cakes, sweets, Girguilding gifts and helium balloons.

There was also the chance for visitors to try their hand at archery while younger children enjoyed playing on the bouncy castle and face painting.

'The BIG Event was designed to show everyone what Girlguid-ing today is all about and why it is the largest organisation for girls and young women.

'Everyone who went agreed that it was a resounding success '“ and they're looking forward to the next one,' said the organiser Fiona Rhodes.
