The ground has been broken on a project to build a supported living centre for people with learning disabilities in Eastbourne.

On Thursday, April 7, Mayor of Eastbourne Janet Coles with consort Jill Rutherford and Cllr David Tutt, leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, visited the JPK Sussex Project, on the site of the old Edgmond Church in Old Town.

The Mayor was present to “raise the first sod in readiness for building work, which began on Monday (April 11).

Jill Parker on behalf of the Trustees of the JPK, said, “It has been a long hard struggle to reach this exciting stage to be able to commence building our much-needed centre.

“We could not have reached this stage without the tremendous support of so many people who have raised much needed funds and who have volunteered throughout the years with our fundraising initiatives.

The initial building work will secure our planning consent, followed on by the refurbishment of the community centre, whilst we continue to fundraise to complete the remainder of the building work for the residential accommodation.

“Our very grateful thanks to the mayor for her support during her current year in office.”
