Government chops funding

Tough '“ but expected, that was the verdict of Arun District Council's leader on the government grant it will receive.

It was announced last week that Arun's funding from Whitehall will rise by 1.8 per cent next April to 10.094m.

Further rises of 0.5 per cent in 2009 and 1.6 per cent in 2010 will take the figure to 10.307m. The current rate of inflation is 2.1 per cent.

Council leader Cllr Gill Brown said the tough settlement had been anticipated. 'We are still considering all the figures, but this settlement from government does appear to allow the council to remain in line with its long-term financial forecast,' she said.

'It will not force us to make any changes to our financial plans.'

But she warned: 'While these figures are tight, and we can work with them, we can't expand or develop new or better services.'
