Golden girl Brenda makes Littlehampton charity's red letter day

ACTRESS Brenda Blethyn came face-to-face with the men and women who put themselves at risk in the real-life drama of fire fighting.

The Golden Globe-winning star of stage and screen was in Littlehampton on Tuesday (October 7) to officially open a new 1.8m development at Marine Court, Fitzalan Road, one of three recuperation centres run by the Fire Fighters' Charity.

It includes extra accommodation, a state-of-the-art swimming pool, hot tub and landscaped outdoor area, all with the aim of helping injured firefighters recover in comfort.

Brenda unveiled a plaque to mark the opening, and said: "I have been terribly impressed with the sterling work of the charity. In over 60 years it has gone from strength to strength, without government funding.

"Firefighters are there to help us in our hour of need and it is vital that we are also there for the firefighters in their hour of need."

Attention then switched to the pool, which was declared open by Paralympic gold medallist Sascha Kindred and his partner, silver medallist Nyree Lewis, who both enjoyed swimming success in Beijing.

New lease of life

Said Sascha: "Both Nyree and I are all too familiar with how an injury or disability can affect everyday life '” if adequate therapy and support is not received.

"The services that the Fire Fighters' Charity provides to its beneficiaries are priceless '” therefore we would like to wish the organisation all the best for the future."

The new facilities have given a fresh lease of life to Marine Court, which was the charity's first centre, purchased 44 years ago. Its modernisation will enable more firefighters and their families to receive the help and support they deserve.

Guests at the opening included the town's MP Nick Gibb and deputy mayor and deputy mayoress Mark and Julie Butler.

Entertainment was provided by Littlehampton Community School's steel band.

Keith MacGillivray, chairman of the charity, said: "I'd like to thank everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the redevelopment opening of Marine Court. This 1.8m investment will enable us to assist 500 extra people a year '” fabulous news for everyone associated with the project."

In the course of a year, more than 13,000 people receive pioneering treatment and support services from the charity, at an annual cost of 9m provided entirely by the public and from the firefighting "community".
