Girl shot at shoppers

A GIRL of 14 shot shoppers and shopkeepers in a town centre with a plastic gun, a Worthing court heard.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted on Tuesday causing harassment, alarm or distress on July 31, in her home town of Littlehampton.

Prosecuting, Sue Lumbard told Worthing Youth Court: "It was 1.15pm and the girl was in Littlehampton with one other friend. They were both in possession of plastic toy guns which fired plastic bullets. The defendant is said to have shot some pellets into shops and at people on the street.

"She was arrested for causing a public nuisance and at the police station admitted the offence."

Ms Lumbard told the court police were considering applying for the youth to be made the subject of an anti-social behaviour order.

Magistrates banned reporting of much of the mitigation by Beverly Cherrill, due to derogatory remarks made.

She said her client felt every institution had come down on her, including her parents, and using the gun was a way of letting out her frustrations. Mrs Cherrill said the youth had other charges pending.

Magistrates said: "We are pleased that you admitted the offence when you were questioned by the police and that you have pleaded guilty today."

The girl was given a three-month referral order and ordered to pay 35 costs.
