Provisional figures show 80 per cent of students at St Richard's gained five or more A star to C grades, with 73 per cent achieving five or more A star to C's including Maths and English.

And five students at the school were among the top scorers in the country for English Literature.

One high achieving student was Gillian Briggs who gained 12 A star grades. She said: "I have no idea how it happened! I'm very happy."

Amy Staffiere, who got nine A stars and three A's, said: "I am really happy. It was really hard work."

"It feels great because I was really worried," said Sophie Hall, who scored seven A stars, two A's and a B.

Principal Tony Campbell said: "There are some really excellent results out there. We are very pleased with what the year group has achieved and our congratulations go to all the students, parents and staff."

Bexhill High head Mike Conn was similarly delighted with the results at his school. Almost 72 per cent of students scored five or more A star to C grades, with 38 per cent gaining five or more of those grades including English and Maths.

It represents a remarkable improvement for the school after around 20 per cent of students gained five or more A star to C grades with English and Maths last year, in what Mr Conn described as a 'blip' due to staffing issues which has now been solved.

The Maths score for the school now stands provisionally at 40 per cent.

Mr Conn said: "I'm delighted. We have gone on an upward trend after last year.

"The increase shows we are now over the difficulties with Maths and we have done tremendously well in that subject.

"Congratulations to all of the students who have worked so hard. The work ethic of this year was fantastic and the results have shown a continued improvement.

"My thanks to students, parents and staff and with their support we can go from strength to strength."
