Felpham footie five-a-side frenzy

Dozens of young footballers took part in a tournament arranged by three Felpham students. Eight teams of five-a-side players produced plenty of shots and tackles as they played their way through the day-long event.

It had been staged by Tom Simmonds and Adam Charles with help from Kieran Playle-Howard whose family holiday clashed with the occasion.

The Felpham Community College pupils were helped by Margaret Sanders, a volunteer advisor from Outset youth action group.

Their efforts were rewarded by the desire by all the players to win the cups and shields on offer. The competition at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham was split into two age groups, 11 to 13-year-olds and 14 to 16-year-olds.

Tom (15) said during the lunch break: "The tournament's going very well. It's good to see our hard work paying off.

"It's difficult to think of everything to do with putting on an event like this. The hardest part was filling in the form for funding from the Youth Opportunities Fund to pay for the tournament.

"But all the players have been really looking forward to it. I've been refereeing the younger age group and all the players are keen to win."

Tom, who plays left-back for Chichester City Colts, and Regis 2000 forward Adam had the idea for the tournament after they had taken part in a football project at South Bersted CE Primary School.

They worked with Maria Parton, of Felpham's youth wing, and linked with Margaret because Outset's role is to contact young people with volunteering roles.
