If you thought blackberries were all the same, think again

When I was a teenager I was picking blackberries one day when a lady called me across and said: "Try these deare, they're ever so firm.".

In those days I had no idea that blackberries were different. I ddin't even know that some ripened early, some fell into your hand somewere large and some were small.

Older and wiser, I know what to pick and what to leave. But I would have to live to be a hundred to be able to identify every one. Sussex has 92 wild species, but in Britain there are 400 different kinds.
