Distressed man talked down from edge of A27 bridge

POLICE were forced to close part of the A27 while they talked down a man who was standing on the edge of bridge over the busy road.

The man, who was described as distressed, had climbed over the fencing on the bridge between Lewes and Kingston.

Traffic was stopped on the Eastbound carriageway of the A27 while officers spoke to him in the early hours of Saturday morning.

After an hour, during which time the road remained closed, they managed to persuade him to climb back to safety and he was detained under the Mental Health Act.
