He and his wife Jean were both Conservative councillors but moved to Swindon to be near their children.

Seaford town clerk Len Fisher has fond memories of Mr Whittle.

He said: 'Les interviewed me for my job in 1996. He was good for the town and very, very proactive. I was very sorry to hear about him. He was the one who got Christmas lights for the town.'

The current Mayor, Cllr Rosemary Collict, said: 'Les and I were colleagues on both the town and district councils and I knew him and Jean really quite well.

'I believe he really had the interests of Seaford people at heart and I am very much saddened to hear of his death. I shall write to his widow and remember him at the next council meeting.'
