Former Pevensey man jailed for lying about driving offences

Sussex Police said Carl Duncan pleaded guilty to three counts of perverting the course of justice at Lewes Crown Court on December 8.

He was sentenced to 255 days’ imprisonment and disqualified from driving for two years.

Police say Duncan blamed three separate motoring offences on a woman he knew in order to avoid prosecution.

The woman he blamed gained nine penalty points on her otherwise clean license according to police.

Police say investigations revealed that Duncan – now of Colvin Gardens in Enfield, but formerly of Pevensey – was the driver on all three occasions because he used his bank card to pay for the fines.

Twice he was caught speeding, first in May 2016 then again in August 2017, then he ran a red light in February 2017.

According to police Duncan received a notice of intended prosecution for all three incidents but nominated the woman known to him before intercepting her post and admitting the offences on her behalf.

On each occasion a retraining offer was sent to the woman, but police say a £100 fine and three points were accepted instead.

Police said it was only after she reported a separate incident to police that these allegations came to light and investigators were able to prosecute Duncan.

He was convicted as part of Operation Pinocchio which was launched by Sussex Police in 2016 with the aim of improving road safety and prosecuting offenders who provide false information in an attempt to avoid prosecution.
