Concerns raised about ‘dangerous’ A29 in Slindon

Councillor John Brown said some motorists travelling along the A29, towards the busy A27, tend to drive at excessive speeds.

He explained the road has seen a number of accidents on it, most recently the three-car collision, which saw two people hospitalised, last week.

Speaking to the Gazette, Cllr Brown said: “It is not a great stretch of road and can be dangerous.

“This is not the first accident that has happened there.

“Because the verges are trimmed back, the road looks a lot larger than it actually is.

“There is also a curve in the road that can catch people out if they are foolish enough to try and overtake traffic by cutting over the double white lines.”

His comments followed Thursday’s crash (January 23) which closed much of the A29 for several hours.

Two people were taken to hospital as a result of the collision, which involved a Ford Mondeo, a black Nissan Juke and a silver BMW.

The driver of the Ford Mondeo, a 33-year-old man from Crawley, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The incident happened shortly after 9.30am.

Firefighters were called to help free the Nissan’s driver, who was seriously injured during the crash.

The 48-year-old woman, from Pulborough, suffered major injuries to her neck, ribs and pelvis and was rushed to Southampton Hospital.

Due to the severity of her wounds, a crew from the Sussex Air Ambulance also responded to the emergency.

However, the decision was made for them not to transport the woman.

The driver of the BMW, a 24-year-old man from Bognor Regis, was taken to St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, with wrist and rib injuries.

Sussex Police has since launched an appeal for witnesses to the collision to come forward and contact them.
