Christmas message from the mayor

The season of Christmas is upon us once again. But when does it really start? The shops begin decorating some time in September.

We, in Bognor Regis, began our public celebrations with the switching on of the Christmas lights on November 17, with the help of Christopher Timothy and a few farmyard animals.

The crowd thronged around the stage, and they were certainly enjoying themselves. Some of us like to celebrate the coming of Christmas with the opening of Advent calendars or the lighting of Advent candles as a preparation for Christmas Day.

The real reason for celebration is the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as a baby to Bethlehem and the new life that He represents. As the Wise Men gave gifts to Jesus so also is Christmas a time for the giving and receiving of presents, as we are reminded in the carol Good King Wenceslas.

I am sure it snows in Romania at this time of year, but the orphans certainly benefited from the shoebox presents that were sent to them from our own town hall.

Another way to give is to volunteer. In my seven months as mayor, I have met so many people who give themselves freely as a service to others. Much important work in this town, especially with the youth, would not continue without this faithful band of volunteers.

Another word for new birth is regeneration, and on December 5, with the signing of the contract with St Modwen, the regeneration of our town has finally started. We certainly have waited a long time for this to happen.

There are many views as to what is required in the town but all are agreed that Bognor Regis needs a new lease of life. We look forward to exciting things in 2008. So all that remains is for my wife, the mayoress, and I to wish you all a happy Christmas and a blessed new year.
