Quiz Night: It’s not long until the latest fund-raising event for the parish church of St Laurence and will take the form of the very popular Quiz Night. This will be held on Saturday 5th September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. The tickets are on sale now in the Village Store or can be bought at the door and cost £5 per person. Liquid refreshments will be available but bring your own nibbles.

WI: The next meeting of Catsfield WI will be in the Village Hall on Thursday 3rd September at 2.30pm and will be our ‘At Home’ meeting. This is when members are invited to bring something to show the meeting and say a few words about a subject that interests them. This year the topic will be ‘Hobbies’ – maybe something that you’ve made yourself or have a special interest in doing. It doesn’t matter what it is or how long ago that you made it, or maybe it could be a sport or class that you attend such as cooking, art, yoga, pilates, singing. It will be interesting to see how many different hobbies in which our members are involved and perhaps to hear about some subjects that will surprise us. I’m mentioning it this week, a bit earlier than usual, to remind people to bring details of their hobby and think of just a few brief words to tell us a little about their interests.

Sports News from Ann Davey: The full Village Voice press corps (she means her and me!) were at the Playing Field on Sunday to watch the match against Newenden, which unfortunately we lost. Newenden have been struggling all season to get a team, a plight suffered by many a cricket club and it is only the efforts of our indefatigable captain Keith Cook who knows so many of the available players and hunts them down, that we usually manage to field a team. Most friendly matches now are played on Sundays as the Saturday league teams take the available players and the Sunday teams hope to pick up a few of those players who want to play both days. One such player we have is Derek Fuller, who got our highest score of 37 runs in our meagre total of 107 all out. Only A Jay with 17 and Martin Gurr 10 reached double figures. Newenden managed to field a team of fine fast bowlers, which our batsmen struggled to deal with under the darkening sky and against the backdrop of the trees. After tea, Connor Earl got our two wickets and despite some courageous fielding by Tom Hammick in mid-wicket, we were unable to stop Newenden finishing with 111 for 2 in 19 overs. Towards the end, the game stopped while we all watched in awe as the magnificent Red Arrows flew over the Playing Field trailing their coloured vapours. What could be better than that? Well we could have won, I suppose!

The footballers had another excellent friendly match on Saturday, which they unfortunately narrowly lost 4 3, but they are getting better. The last home cricket match of the season is on Sunday versus Parkhurst, followed by the very last match away to Netherfield. The Saturday matches by a Bexhill team on our Field finished last weekend, no more wickets for the volunteer groundsman to prepare, but these have produced some useful revenue for the upkeep of the Playing Field.

Mobile Library: The Mobile Library will again be outside the Village Hall in Church Road in its usual place from 11.55am – 12.30pm today, Friday 21st August (sorry, I wrote July last week!)
